Sorde l'Abbaye, located along the Gave d'Oloron river, has a remarkable historic heritage. The village is a stop listed on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage routes, a European cultural route listed as part of UNESCO’s World Heritage.

The numerous relics, dating from various eras, are proof of mankind’s presence at the site since prehistoric times. The village’s most valuable asset is its architectural heritage (priests’ house, monastery and church).

The 11th century former pilgrims’ hospital (hôpital des pèlerins) is also proof of the village having been a known stop along the Santiago de Compostela routes.

Lastly, the topography of the site gives visitors a spectacular view of the Gave d’Oloron valley and the Pyrenees mountains.
